It's been just under two months since Avery Johnson was introduced as the head coach of the Alabama men's basketball program, but he's hit the ground running during that time.

Johnson joined The Chris Stewart Show on Tuesday to talk about his schedule that's taken him all over the state and the south.

"I run to work every morning to be able to work with these young men, this staff, and this administration," Johnson told Chris Stewart. "I'm bouncing around the state. I'm going to talk to the Rotary Club at Birmingham tomorrow and have a reception at one of the trustee's homes. We're making so much progress here."

In between recruiting players for the upcoming season and making public appearances at events all over Alabama, Johnson has gotten the opportunity to spend some time with his team and begin installing his system.

"(The players') attitudes have just been great," Johnson said. "We're throwing a lot of stuff at them right now but they're catching on fast.

"And their work ethic has been pretty good. We have a lot of young players that have never been coached like this before, and we're going to be pretty demanding. Part of who I am and one of the attractions Coach Battle had in hiring me is I'm a little bit of an old school coach."

The first-year head coach is preparing for the first summer camps, which will begin on June 14. Not only is this an opportunity to get to know the players and coaches around the state, but his staff will also use this as a chance to evaluate some guys that might have gone unnoticed during the recruiting process.

"We know who the superstar kids are. We know who the blue chip kids are," Johnson said. "But we're also looking for some Avery Johnsons. We're looking for a guy, a kid, a student that's fallen through the cracks.

"You gotta have guys that are hard-nosed and that have certain roles and skill sets that can help our team become a great team."

Over the past month, Johnson has watched American Pharoah win the Kentucky Derby in person and played alongside the eventual Regions Tradition champion during a pro-am round, but there's still one event that might trump them all: Kristen Saban's wedding.

"That wedding was unbelievable, way over the top," Johnson said. "I'm glad I made the cut for that one. I wouldn't want to have anyone else telling me about it."
