Each week leading up to Alabama's A-Day game, I will highlight two position groups and preview both the presumed starters and key depth pieces, as well as players that could challenge for a starting role this season. First, and most importantly, is quarterbacks.

Starter

Bryce Young

This is certainly obvious, but it is worth taking a look once more just how incredible Bryce Young was in his first season as Alabama's starter. In 15 games, the sophomore threw for over 4,800 yards and 47 touchdowns, becoming the first Alabama quarterback to ever win the Heisman Trophy.

Young is in no danger of losing his starting position, and he has no reason to be. The junior of out Mater Dei was the best quarterback in the country last season, and is again this year.

Backups

Jalen Milroe

The former four-star out of Texas was the 13th ranked quarterback in the 2021 class and split time with Paul Tyson as the backup to Young last season. Despite mostly seeing time in mop-up duty, Milroe still managed to excite fans with his electrifying athleticism and rocket arm, albeit slightly inaccurate at times. In four appearances last year, Milroe completed 3-of-7 passes for just over 40 yards and a score, but also showed off his skills as a runner, rushing the ball 15 times for 57 yards.

Since Tyson's departure to Arizona State, Milroe will likely serve as the main backup to Young, but could face some competition from an exciting incoming freshman.

Ty Simpson

Alabama's latest five-star quarterback, Simpson was the third ranked signal caller in 2021, and chose the Crimson Tide over a plethora of other offers. Hailing from Martin, TN, the former Westview Charger looks to be a real contender for the backup spot. Simpson is a multi-dimensional quarterback who has the ability to both make plays with his arm or extend them with his feet and showed it multiple times in high school. Despite playing in a smaller division in Tennessee, Simpson was clearly a fantastic, can't-miss prospect.

While Milroe is likely to be the true QB2 this season, Simpson could very likely see time as a freshman, taking a role similar to Milroe in 2021.

Reserves

Blake Jarrett

A walk-on from Vanderbilt, Jarrett was an unranked prospect coming out of San Marcos High School in San Diego in 2020. After not appearing in any games for the commodores in his freshman season, Jarrett took another walk-on spot with the Crimson Tide for his sophomore season and will serve as extra depth and reserve quarterback should Alabama need one.
