On Friday, Judge Daniel F. Pruet set Miles' trial date for the week of December 1, with jury selection set to take place the week before. The trial is expected to last one week.

One week is how long the trial lasted for Michael "Buzz" Davis, who was found guilty of capital murder in May for the same shooting in Tuscaloosa. Davis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole during his trial. The jury deliberated for roughly an hour.

In Davis's case, the state argued that Davis shot and killed 23-year-old Jamea Harris during a "cold-blooded ambush" on January 15, 2023. Harris and her boyfriend, Cedric Johnson, were driving a Jeep Wrangler with Harris's cousin, Asia Humphrey, when Harris was shot and killed.

The shooting came in the pre-dawn hours of the next morning after Alabama basketball defeated the LSU Tigers in a home men's basketball game. Davis spent Saturday night with Darius Miles, Jaden Bradley, and Brandon Miller, alongside other members of the Alabama men's basketball team.

Miller and Bradley drove, with Miller dropping off everyone inside Twelve25 before leaving to meet Kai Spears and a team manager at another restaurant. No issues took place inside Twelve25.

During Davis's trial, Cedric Johnson testified that Davis said something like, "Do you know who I am? I'm Buzz and I whack people."

Both sides agree that whatever was said during the interaction led to Harris passing Johnson his weapon.

Miles testified during Davis's trial that both he and Davis saw the weapon passed to Johnson and began fearing for their lives.
