Trent Richardson Continuing Professional Career

Former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson is joining a new professional football team. The Caudillos de Chihuahua of the Mexican American Football League announced the signing of the former Heisman Trophy finalist at a press conference last Thursday.

While Richardson was seen wearing a Caudillos jersey with his name on the back of it, he left the question of whether or not he would be playing very open ended.

"We'll have to let y'all know," Richardson said, "Breaking news will come out soon. We’ve talked about everything in our meetings that we’ve been having. So who knows? I might play. I might be a part of making decisions or helping out bringing awareness or I might be a part of D – all of the above. So we’ll see.”

Richardson contemplated the continuation of his playing career with his new team.

"I’ve got to talk it over with my family,” Richardson said,  “I do have kids. My girls, they’re starting high school next year, and so I don’t have that long left with them as far as spending father-daughter time with them. They barely won’t talk to me now. They’re on their cellphones all the time. And I do have my sons, too. They’re playing little league football, and they’re real good in sports," Richardson continued, "But when it comes to being a father figure, kids need you. They need that protection. They need that story, they need that background, that pedigree. I didn’t have that, so for me, my biggest thing is I’ve always been a better father than I was any type of football player.”

Richardson most recently played professionally in 2019 for the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football, rushing for 366 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games, before the league ultimately folded. The Pensacola native was drafted third overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns and bounced around the league until 2016 before spending one season in the CFL on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The FAM, or Mexican American Football League, is set to kick off its third season in July of this year, and plans to play a ten game schedule. The league consists of seven teams, with an eighth team expected to join soon, and teams can feature up to 15 foreign players on the roster.

Richardson was an absolute monster in his time at Alabama, racking up 3,130 rushing yards in his three seasons, and 1,679 in 2011 alone. The former five star also added 35 touchdowns in his career with the Tide, making him top ten in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns at Alabama.

Whether or not the Tide legend will be continuing his playing career or starting a potential coaching/advisory role should be announced soon, but in the meantime here is a reminder of what made Trent Richardson so special at Alabama.
