AUBURN, AL – In a season opener that left fans buzzing, Auburn’s basketball team showcased a dazzling display of three-point shooting, overwhelming Vermont with a barrage of long-range shots. The Tigers, not typically known for their three-point prowess, made a statement by sinking 46 percent (16-of-35) of their attempts from beyond the arc, leading to a decisive victory.

Auburn’s shooting spree began early, as the team drained eight of its first 14 attempts from deep, including a streak of six consecutive makes. This shooting clinic buried Vermont in a substantial deficit, from which they never recovered.

Three key players – JP Pegues, Denver Jones, and Baker-Mazara – each contributed back-to-back triples, rapidly inflating Auburn’s lead. Pegues spearheaded an 18-3 run that reignited Auburn’s offense after a brief cold spell. Baker-Mazara’s step-back three-pointer, nailed right in front of Auburn’s raucous student section, prompted Vermont to call a timeout in a desperate bid to halt the Tigers’ momentum.

Miles Kelly was particularly spectacular, hitting five three-pointers in under four minutes of game time, further demoralizing Vermont and electrifying the home crowd.

Auburn’s defense, a standout feature from their two exhibition games, remained relentless in the season opener, stifling Vermont’s offense and forcing turnovers that translated into scoring opportunities.

With this commanding victory, Auburn has set a high bar for their season. However, they know the competition will intensify significantly. The team is already preparing for their next challenge against Houston, with crucial practices lined up for Thursday and Friday.

As the Tigers turn their focus to the formidable opponents ahead, their fans can relish in the exhilarating start to the season, hopeful that Auburn’s shooting brilliance and tenacious defense will carry them far.
