Florida Upsets Tennessee: What It Means For Alabama
The Florida Gators pulled off a stunning upset of the No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday night in Gainesville behind a strong start and a stifling defensive effort.
Coli Castleton led the way with 20 points for the Gators, while Kyle Lofton added 14 of his own. Florida did not allow a single Tennessee player to score more than 15 points on the evening, holding all but one Volunteer to 11 points or less.
What exactly does this mean for Alabama?
Alabama extends its lead over the Volunteers in conference play to two full games with the Volunteers' loss, asserting itself firmly atop the standings.
The Tide travel to Knoxville on Feb. 15, where the two elite squads will collide for their lone regular season meeting this season.
Florida's win over Tennessee now affords Alabama an extra mulligan, as the Tide can lose in Knoxville and still win the SEC outright. This is a massive win for Alabama, as the winner of the game in Thompson-Boling Arena will hold the tiebreaker for the top seed in the conference tournament.
A perfect 9-0 record in conference play has the Tide in prime position to pick up another SEC regular season crown to go with its 2020-2021 banner and possibly even a No. 1 overall seed.
You could not have asked for a better start to the week if you are an Alabama basketball fan.
