Former Alabama and current Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne has been suspended for one game without pay by the NFL following an altercation with Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in Washington's 44-22 loss to Detroit. Payne appealed the suspension, but the league upheld the decision.

Washington is set to play Miami in Madrid this week. Payne is allowed to return to the team the day following the game.

In the second quarter of the Commanders' game versus the Lions, the 28-year-old punched St. Brown with his right hand, prompting the ejection and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — marking Payne's first career ejection.

Through ten games this season, Payne has one sack and 12 tackles in addition to a forced fumble, five pass deflections, and a blocked kick. The Commanders currently sit at 3-7 and are on a five-game losing skid.
