He won’t do this all season.

He can’t.

It ain’t possible.

The downright gaudy .720 batting average that Alabama sophomore outfielder Casey Hughston is sporting after six games, is 53 percentage points higher than the two players tied behind him in the current NCAA Division One stats.

Keep in mind that the Alabama season record is David Magadan’s .525 back in 1983. So the odds of Hughston maintaining anything close to his current pace is very slim. Enjoy the ride while it’s happening. Things like this don’t happen very often.

The next stop on the Casey Hughston Hit Parade is today in Hoover, when the Tide hosts Savannah State in a doubleheader. First pitch for the opener is at 2 p.m. You can hear the broadcast on Tide 99.1 FM.

I’ll have to miss Hughston and the Tide because of my basketball assignment for the Crimson Tide Sports Network. Alabama will try to bounce back from Saturday’s loss to Georgia, and avenge their earlier season setback to South Carolina, when the Tide hosts Gamecocks tonight at 6.

If there’s one player you really need to keep an eye on, it’s Carolina’s Michael Carrera.

At just 6-5 and 215 pounds, the junior forward is far from the biggest post player that Alabama has faced. But his Tazmanian Devil type tenacity on the glass makes him tough to stop on the glass if you don’t match his energy.

He was a big part of the Gamecocks 68-66 win over the Tide earlier in conference play.

We’ll have the call locally on 95.3 FM, The Bear.
