Hoover BOE Accepts Resignations of Football Coaches

In an urgent meeting held Thursday, the Hoover City Board of Education accepted the immediate resignations of head football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms, following a social media uproar over videos depicting the coaches’ questionable conduct during a recent practice session.

Jonathan Hardison of Fox 6 WBRC was the first to report the dismissal of the head coach and defensive coordinator.

Placed on administrative leave earlier in the week, head coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms became the focal point of an investigation spurred by the circulation of these alarming videos. The swift and decisive response from Hoover City Schools underscores the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our utmost priorities,” declared Superintendent Kevin Maddox in an official statement. “We uphold stringent standards for our employees and students alike. At this juncture, our primary focus is on providing robust support to our football players and coaching staff.”

Attempts to reach Gilmer for comment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the board has appointed Chip English as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Hoover is set to kick off its season on August 24 in Florida, competing in a high-profile showcase event against Western of Davie, Florida.

The controversy intensified when attorneys Juandalynn Givan and Reginald McDaniel, representing a player featured in the contentious video, alleged “physical abuse and extreme humiliation.” They plan to pursue potential state and federal claims against the Hoover school system and Gilmer. As Hoover’s football program navigates this tumultuous period, the focus remains steadfast on upholding the safety, integrity, and high standards that have long been the hallmarks of Hoover High School football.
