Alabama fans who have been critical of the play calling all season long may have received a bit of good news this morning.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars will interview Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien for their open head coaching vacancy.

While this may sound surprising if you only listened to the noise from the fans all year, O'Brien has quietly helped to put together one of the most productive offenses in the nation while developing a new quarterback along with an entirely new offensive line and cast of weapons both in the passing game and the running game.

Alabama is averaging over 40 points per game to go along with nearly 500 yards per game, each good enough for fourth in the nation. Perhaps the most telling statistic of all with regards to O'Brien's play calling is Alabama's success on third down. The Tide converted on 53.93% of their third down attempts, which was the best in the nation.

These impressive numbers have clearly not gone unnoticed, as O'Brien is now up for what has to be considered one of the most sought after jobs in this year's NFL coaching carousel.

While the Jags have won just three games in two years and are picking at No. 1 for the second straight year in the draft, they boast a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence as well as some key pieces on both sides of the ball such as linebackers Josh Allen and Myles Jack, and running backs James Robinson and Travis Etienne, who missed all of his rookie campaign due to injury.

After the fiasco of the Urban Meyer tenure, the Jags need someone who can steady the ship and provide some stability to the organization, which O'Brien has done previously when he took over at Penn State and exceeded expectations greatly.

While some Alabama fans may not believe it, losing O'Brien would hurt tremendously and be an immense challenge for Bryce Young and the offense next season to build up new chemistry with an entirely different play caller. Time will tell if O'Brien is actually the man Jacksonville ends up hiring, but he is certainly qualified and the Jags would be wise to strongly consider him.
