Jahvon Quinerly Talks Playing Against Former Suitor
The top-seeded Alabama men’s basketball team is still rolling in the NCAA Tournament. A 96-75 win on Thursday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned the Crimson Tide its 30th win and a berth in the Round of 32. Veteran Alabama guard Jahvon Quinerly spoke after the game about playing the Maryland Terrapins in the Round of 32 for the second time in three seasons.
“Maryland is a tough team in a tough conference,” said Quinerly after Alabama’s Round of 64 win. “Some of those guys are still there from two years ago- I’m pretty sure they’re gonna come out with a chip on their shoulder.”
The New Jersey native was recruited out of high school by current Maryland head coach Kevin Willard, who at the time was leading New Jersey’s own Seton Hall Pirates. Willard’s anticipated move to Maryland made way for the highly publicized hiring of former St. Peter’s coach Shaheen Holloway in South Orange.
“[Kevin Willard] recruited me out of high school. I was talking to Kevin Willard a lot coming out of high school. He’s a great coach, great person… He’s gonna have those guys ready to play us.”
Quinerly had 14 points in the 2021 March Madness meeting between the Crimson Tide and the Terrapins. He had a double-double, adding 11 assists to his stat sheet as well as five rebounds. The win in that game was Alabama’s last of the illustrious 2020-21 campaign.
The Crimson Tide is set to tip off against Maryland at approximately 8:40 p.m. CT on Saturday night.
