Mark Richt Remembers the Final Play of SEC Championship (AUDIO)

On December 1st 2012, the Alabama Crimson Tide met the Georgia Bulldogs in one of the most tightly contested football games, not only of the season but in SEC Championship game history.

The game went back and forth through the course of the contest, but things tightened up in the final moments of the contest. On Thursday Georgia coach Mark Richt recalled the final play from the viewpoint of the opposing sidelines.

"On the very last play of the game for us we had a receiver who was running a fade route in the back of the end zone and an inside receiver running a little speed out route into the flat. The thinking of behind that is if its man-to-man coverage we'll throw the fade to the back of the end zone, but if its zone, the purpose of the inside guy is to hopefully draw the attention of the corner out there playing zone and possibly get the ball in the back end of end zone.

So either way the goal of the play was to get the ball to the back of the end zone.

What happened was because it was man coverage, Murray is big on throwing the back shoulder throw a little behind the receiver so the defender cant make a play on it. Since he made that kind of throw in the end zone the trajectory of the ball was a little flatter than if he were throwing a fade.

The ball got tipped and landed in the hands of the kid running the flat, in bounds. Obviously when he caught it, we had no chance of running another play. "

The comment comes three days after Richt's offensive coordinator Mike Bobo told a crowd in Augusta that the Bulldogs had planned to call a play from the Florida Gators playbook, drawing from the effectiveness of then Gator quarterback Tim Tebow against Alabama in the 2008 SEC Championship Game.

The Telegraph in Macon, Georgia quoted the Bulldogs offensive coordinator as saying:

"We had actually gone back to, I don’t know what it was, it was one of the Florida-Alabama games, where Alabama had given up three red zone scores to Florida. It was a play that Florida had actually ran against Alabama. It was an empty set, and had two primary front-side, and a double-slant backside. It was something from ’08 or ’09 that Tebow had completed against them. Because I remember after that game, Kirby was talking about how, ‘We just couldn’t stop them in the red zone.’ So we just studied that hard."

The thrilling SEC Championship came to an end when Alabama linebacker CJ Mosley leapt into the air to tip Aaron Murray's pass intended for Malcom Jenkins. Tony Barnhart of CBS Sports wrote in a recent article that the play should go down as one of the top plays in Alabama history.
