The mayor, who visited the injured officers at DCH Regional Medical Center shortly after they were transported there from the scene, took to Twitter late Monday evening to commend the first responders who handled the incident earlier that day.

"At DCH this evening, I had the opportunity to visit with our two officers who were injured in the line of duty, and express the City’s sincere appreciation for their bravery," Maddox wrote in a tweet. The suspect, who shot a police officer in the chest, raised his hands in surrender when approached by officers who were canvassing the area. He was taken into custody without incident but was still transported to DCH to be "checked out" by physicians.

Tuscaloosa Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Taylor acknowledged that TPD Chief Brent Blankley rode with the suspect to the hospital in the ambulance and will rendezvous with the injured officers shortly.

More information on the officers' conditions and the suspect's identification and charges will be available soon.
