Red Devils Rip Greenwave Championship Hopes
It is week two of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Playoffs and few teams remain standing as the post-season is in play. The Gordo Greenwave are coming off a 41-14 win against Rogers High School as this team enters week two on the road against the Fyffe High School Red Devils. Fyffe is number 1 in their region with an undefeated record of 7-0 in 3A Region 8.
Gordo wins the coin toss and receives the opening kick. The game was scoreless until 5:39 in the first quarter when Fyffe was able to strike first with a touchdown. Gordo struggled to put points up this first quarter with the defense unfortunately giving up another six points making the score 13-0 with 1:52 left in the first quarter.
Fyffe put up 36 rushing yards with 14 pass yards in this first quarter while Gordo was unable to do anything in the run game with negative eight yards but found success in the pass game with 86 yards in the first quarter.
Not much changed during the second quarter as Fyffe was able to score again with 10 seconds left in the second quarter putting the score up 21-0. Gordo still has not been able to produce in the run game with negative nine rush yards to end the second quarter. Fyffe is now up to 126 pass yards going into halftime.
Gordo wasn't able to get a score until late into the third quarter after Fyffe was able to make the score 28-0. With the Greenwave on the board, the score is now 28-7. Before the third quarter was over Fyffe was able to extend their lead by another touchdown. The dominance from this Red Devils team continued into the fourth quarter, putting up one more touchdown and only allowing Gordo to score at the end of the game. In a lopsided score of 42 to 14, the Greenwave have been eliminated from the AHSAA Playoffs.
Only one team in West Alabama still stands as the Tuscaloosa Acadamy Knights will play at home next week after a 34 to 9 win over the Susan Moore Bulldogs. Check out Tide100.9 for the Tuscaloosa Academy vs. Susan Moore article from sports writer Micah Nichols.
