Tuscaloosa, AL -- Senior quarterback Ethan Crawford has been named to the preseason Mr. Football list leading up to the start of this years high school football season. The selection comes with little surprise after Crawford lead the Patriots to last years 6A semi-finals.

The 6' 2 dual-threat was selected to the 2021 All-State Second Team after posting an impressive showing last year. Crawford accounted for 41 total touchdowns last season with 24 coming through the air and the other 17 on the ground. Crawford's dual threat ability allowed him to accumulate almost 3000 total yards.

Crawford (a three-star prospect according to 247sports) declared earlier in the summer that he would be committing to The University of Southern Mississippi to continue his playing career at the collegiate level. The commitment could prove to be a major pickup for a team that has struggled the last few seasons but is making the switch to the Sun Belt conference this season.

Crawford's biggest competition for the award goes to Hueytown's quarterback Earl Woods who finished as last season's runner up for the award. Crawford will get the chance to go head-to-head with Woods on September ninth in Hueytown in what should be Hillcrest's toughest region matchup of the season.

Crawford and Hillcrest posted a record of 12-3 last season before falling to Hueytown in the AHSAA 6A state playoffs, but with Crawford returning for his senior season, the Patriots are set to make a run at this year's state title.

Hillcrest opens this years season against reigning 5A state champion Pike Road on Friday August 19 in Tuscaloosa. The matchup should provide an early challenge for Crawford to make an early leap towards winning the highest honor for a player in the state.
