Week 2 High School Football Recap
The second week of high school football around west Alabama wrapped up with Paul Bryant High School falling in Mobile to Plant High School out of Tampa, Florida. Elsewhere around the region, Hillcrest, Tuscaloosa County and Gordo followed up week one victories with impressive performances Friday night.
Plant (FL) 51 Paul Bryant 21 (Saturday in Mobile)
Paul Bryant faced a tall task going against one of the top high school football teams in Florida during the inaugural Mobil Bay Gridiron Challenge. The task proved to be too tough for the Stampede as they fell to Plant High School Saturday at Mobile’s Ladd Peebles Stadium. Wide receiver Seth Williams was one of the top individual performers for either team as he hauled in three touchdown receptions in the game. Paul Bryant opened the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Ty’Javian Edwards to Williams. The Stampede receiver added a pair of touchdowns in the second half from quarterback Justin Cannon.
Tuscaloosa County (7A) 56 Northridge (6A) 14
Tuscaloosa County avenged their loss to Northridge last season with an impressive victory Friday night in Northport. With the game tied 14-14, Wildcats return specialist Randy Echols returned a second quarter kickoff for a touchdown to lead a TCHS rally. Trey Miller and Maurice Henry, Jr. recorded pick sixes for the Wildcats. TCHS running back Frederick Evans scored twice on the ground in the win. Turnovers doomed Northridge as they lost four fumbles in addition to the two interceptions.
#4 Hillcrest (6A) 41 Oak Mountain (7A) 21
The Hillcrest Patriots followed up their domination of Demopolis with a victory over Oak Mountain to open the home schedule. Alabama commit Brian Robinson paced the Patriots with three touchdowns. Quarterback Cole Frederick put Hillcrest on the board with a 60-yard TD pass to Torin Mayhew. Hillcrest led 34-0 at halftime en route to their 41-21 win.

Gordo followed up their season opening win over Fayette County by pitching a shutout against Aliceville. The Green Wave defense limited the Yellow Jackets to 135 yards of total offense in the game. Gordo quarterback Koy Chapman complete 16 of 22 passes for 122 yards with two touchdowns. Collin Herring recorded a rushing touchdown and led Gordo with eight tackles. Albert Wells totaled nine tackles to lead Aliceville.
