Alabama Alumni Haylie McCleney and Kelly Kretschman Shine at the USASoftball International Cup
Former Alabama softball standouts Haylie McCleney and Kelly Kretschman represented Team USA at the USA Softball International Cup this past week at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif. McCleney earned gold with Team Red while Kretschman took home the bronze with Team Blue.
McCleney and the USA Red squad went undefeated over six games, culminating in a 10-5 victory over Japan Sunday for the tournament championship. The Morris, Ala., native earned a hit in four of the five games she played in, going 5-for-16 (.312) at the plate with three walks, three RBIs and four runs scored. McCleney, who has competed with Team USA every season since 2014, will continue international play at the 2018 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s World Championship in Tokyo, Japan in August.
Kretschman’s USA Blue squad secured a third-place finish with a walk-off victory over China in Sunday’s bronze medal game. The four-time All-American led the USA Blue offense, going 10-for-16 (.625) over seven games with nine runs scored and six walks.
