TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Arriving in Tuscaloosa in the summer of 2023, Rob Vaughn brought over a tradition from his time with Maryland, where the team captain is awarded the No. 3.

The No. 3 represents the three "pillars" Vaughn intends to build his baseball program on: toughness, ownership, and grit.

The third player to don the No. 3 for Alabama under Rob Vaughn will be catcher Will Plattner. Plattner, a rising senior, was voted by his teammates to earn the captaincy for the 2026 campaign.

Plattner joins 2025 captain OF Kade Snell and 2024 captain OF Evan Sleight as Crimson Tide captains under Vaughn.

Plattner transferred to the program after his freshman season at Ole Miss in 2023. Plattner did not see any playing time with the Crimson Tide in 2024.

In 2025, Plattner split time behind the dish with Brady Neal. Plattner appeared in 26 games, starting in 23, hitting .264 with 13 RBIs and eight doubles.

The Springfield, Ill. native is expected to compete for the bulk of the catching duties with the Neal above and Southern Illinois transfer John Lemm. Luke Vaughn, who spent the 2025 campaign dealing with an injury, is expected to be in the mix as well.
