TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—Following Alabama’s 48-19 thrashing of South Carolina on Saturday, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media about the loss. He highlighted inconsistency as the biggest factor, citing his offense’s inability to score in the red zone and his defense’s failure to slow down Crimson Tide redshirt freshman quarterback Keelon Russell as the main contributors to the defeat.

Beamer opened his press conference by using the word "inconsistent" several times, and that was exactly how the Gamecocks played Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Beamer’s squad gave up 489 yards of total offense and allowed Alabama to cruise to a 31-point victory, despite South Carolina finishing with 419 total yards. The Gamecocks also lost the turnover battle, giving up a pick-six, returned 23 yards to the end zone by defensive back Red Morgan at the 2:20 mark of the second quarter, and a fumble at the 5:16 mark of the fourth quarter, which set up a one-yard rushing touchdown from Daniel Hill to give the Tide a commanding 31-point lead at the two-minute warning.

“We were just too inconsistent tonight, and when you have the inconsistencies that we had, you get your ass embarrassed in this league, and that’s what happened. You get beat by 31 on the road when you’re inconsistent and up and down,” Beamer said. “We’re not a consistent enough football team right now, and that’s what I just told the players: we gotta be more consistent. We showed signs tonight of some really good football; really proud of the way we competed in the second half, the way we responded in the second half. It’s no surprise; I knew our guys would. But in this league, if you don’t finish drives in the red zone and you turn the ball over and give up explosives on defense, which is what we did tonight, that’s a recipe for what happened tonight.”

South Carolina couldn’t extend drives in its loss to Alabama, going 3-for-14 on third downs and ending its first two drives with a missed field goal and a turnover on downs inside the Crimson Tide’s 30-yard line. On the very next play after South Carolina’s turnover on downs, Russell found Alabama’s sophomore wide receiver Lotzier Brooks for a 75-yard touchdown to put the Tide up 7-0 with 5:43 left in the first quarter.

Alabama’s next two touchdowns came on plays of over 30 yards, as Russell connected with junior wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams both times, first on a 32-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter, then on a 42-yard reception with 7:22 remaining in the first half.

Beamer went on to discuss the game plan: run the ball and affect the quarterback. The Gamecocks accomplished one of those objectives, finishing with 216 rushing yards, but they failed to affect Alabama’s redshirt freshman quarterback, who picked apart the South Carolina secondary with 365 passing yards and four touchdowns.

“We played way too good of defense around here for a long time to give up whatever it was tonight, 365 yards in the passing game,” South Carolina’s head coach added. “Coming into this game, we said we needed to do two things to win the football game: run the football and affect the quarterback. We clearly did not affect the quarterback enough.”

The Gamecocks will look to get back on track after back-to-back losses when they host Kentucky next Saturday, Oct. 3, with kickoff scheduled for 3:15 p.m. CT.
