Alabama ONE Donating for National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Female sports are growing at an enormous rate.

In the past year: the WCWS averaged 1.2 million viewers, up 10% since 2019, according to NFCA.org; the 2021 women's college basketball national championship between Stanford and Arizona averaged 4.1 million viewers, becoming the highest viewed game since 2014, according to ESPN; the 2021 NCAA volleyball championship between Wisconsin and Nebraska averaged nearly 1.2 million viewers, the most ever for an ESPN airing; and most recently, the Alabama gymnastics meet vs Florida on ABC became the second most-watched meet on an ESPN platform since 2011.

Wednesday, February 2, 2022, is the 36th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a day where we acknowledge the impact female athletes and sports have made throughout the years.

In honor of this annual event, Alabama ONE Credit Union is doing something special to give back- The AlabamaONE Aspire Foundation will match all dollar-for-dollar donations up to $25,000 to the Crimson Tide Scholarship Fund between now and February 2nd.

According to the Crimson Tide Foundation, "This year, Alabama Athletics is expected to spend more than $20 million on student-athlete scholarships. Funds raised through the CTSF go directly to this scholarship expense, offsetting the overall scholarship funding needed for the Athletics Department."

This year is also the 50th anniversary of Title IX being passed, a law that bans discrimination based on sex. According to the US Department of Education, it states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The foundation suggests making donations in fifty intervals (50, 500, etc)., if able, in honor of that milestone as well.
