Alabama Takes CFP Top Spot in Week 1
The Alabama Crimson Tide takes the No. 1 spot as the first week of the College Football Playoff Poll was released tonight. This was the first of four iterations of the College Football Playoff Poll before the final edition is revealed on Dec. 20. This was the 19th time the Crimson Tide has been named No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Poll.
The rest of the SEC was well represented as five teams from the conference were selected in the first edition of the playoff poll. Alabama is No. 1, Texas A&M is No. 5, Florida is No. 6, Georgia is No. 9 and Auburn is No. 22.
The undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish claim the No. 2 spot in the poll with arguably the best win in college football on its resume. The Irish will be tested this week as it plays No. 19 North Carolina and then conclude its season with contests with Syracuse and Wake Forrest.
Should the Irish win the remainder of its games it will likely have a rematch with the No. 3 Clemson Tigers.
The Tigers lost on the road to the Irish on Nov. 7 after missing starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and several starting defenders due to COVID-19 protocols. Clemson has Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech left on its schedule but could possibly make up a missed game with Florida State as well before attempting to get revenge for its loss.
The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes is in the final spot of the final four despite only playing in four games this year. The Buckeyes have scored 38 points or more in all four of its games and is coming off a victory over No. 12 Indiana. Ohio State finishes with Illinois, Michigan State and Michigan and appear to be lining up with the surprising Northwestern in the Big 10 title game.
