Auburn Lands Texas A&M Quarterback Via Transfer Portal
Former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Zach Calzada has announced via social media he is transferring to the Auburn Tigers for the 2022 college football season. Calzada announced his entry into the Transfer Portal in December.
According to Fly War Eagle, Calzada has visited with Auburn since Wednesday.
Calzada took over for the Aggies at quarterback in Week 2 after initial starter Haynes King broke his leg. Calzada went on to throw for 2,185 yards with 17 touchdowns to 9 interceptions.
The Aggies finished the 2021 season 8-4. Of course, the stamp of the season for Jimbo Fisher's program this season was defeating the Crimson Tide at Kyle Field 41-38. Calzada played a big part in that victory as he threw for a season-high 285 yards and three touchdowns.
The Aggies landed LSU quarterback Max Johnson in the transfer portal. King was expected to be ready for the Gator Bowl before the Aggies pulled out of the game, though he wasn't expected to start the game. His future, with the arrival of Johnson in mind, isn't exactly clear.
As for the Tigers quarterback room, TJ Finley's future is just as murky as King's. Finley struggled in relief of Bo Nix and was a near non-factor against the Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl. The Tigers did add a 4-star quarterback in each of the past two recruiting classes: Dematrius Davis in 2021 and Holden Geriner in 2022.
As it stands right now, it would appear Zach Calzada and Bryce Young will quarterback their respective teams in 2022, this time in the Iron Bowl.
