Butch Jones Will Move to New Role
Nick Saban is adjusting the role for offensive analyst Butch Jones. According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Jones will now be the Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Former running backs coach Burton Burns was filling this role for the Crimson Tide prior to his departure to the New York Giants. Jones has been an offensive analyst for Alabama for the previous two seasons.
Jones brings with him 11 years of head coaching experience into this new role, having been head coach for Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Tennessee. This move likely ensures Jones will not depart for the vacant Colorado head coaching job and fills a vacant position on the Crimson Tide staff. Jones was rumored to be leaving Alabama in 2018 to join Mike Locksley’s staff at Maryland but opted to stay in Tuscaloosa and continue his career as an analyst. Jones has won four conference titles as head coach, two in the MAC and two in the Big East.
