Could Mac Jones Be This Year’s Joe Burrow?
In 2019 the LSU Tigers was undefeated and won a national title thanks in large part to senior Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Joe Burrow. Burrow tossed an NCAA-record 60 touchdown passes and finished with the third most passing yards in a season with 5,671 yards. His performance was magical in each game as he led the Tigers to its first national championship in 12 years.
Through two games in the 2020 season, could Alabama's Mac Jones be beginning a Burrow-like season for the Crimson Tide?
Jones is fresh off a game with the Texas A&M Aggies that saw him go 20-for-27 passing for 435 yards and four touchdowns. This leaves the redshirt junior quarterback with 684 yards on the year and six touchdowns with one interception. His performance has lifted the Tide to two relatively casual victories to open the season at 2-0.
Last season Burrow's record pace saw him pass for 749 yards and nine touchdowns while also catapulting the Tigers to a 2-0 start.
Jones is currently behind the Heisman winning campaign that Burrow orchestrated in 2019 but not by much.
Consider this, while Burrow had thrown three more touchdown passes to this point, he averaged four per game, Jones at his point in the year is averaging three per game.
Burrows total yardage is certainly more through two games but on a per game basis he averaged 378 yards in each contest in 2019 while Jones is averaging 342.
Jones has started the season off hot despite not having spring practice to lean on and having an altered fall camp. The Crimson Tide has jumped right into conference play and found some consistency in the passing game last week against the Aggies.
Should Jones and his compliment of passing weapons of DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and John Metchie III continue to connect for deep passes the group could propel the Tide to a historic season as Burrow did for the Tigers last year.
