DeBoer is ‘Da Man’ at Alabama
Coach Hirer Extraordinaire Greg Byrne has his man, and he did it within the 72-hour window he promised the Alabama football team Wednesday.
Kalen DeBoer has agreed to terms to become the 29th coach in Alabama's storied football history. Alabama is expected to hold a press conference Saturday afternoon to make it official, but the deal is done per multiple reports in Alabama and Washington.
DeBoer is expected to bring most if not all of his current Washington staff with him to Tuscaloosa. Terms of his contract have not yet been disclosed.
DeBoer, 49, has guided the Huskies of Washington the past two seasons, where he led them to a 25-3 record and an appearance in the national championship game this past week. That was the only game Washington lost all of the 2023 season. As a head coach, he's 5-0 vs. supposed Alabama candidates Steve Sarkisian of Texas and Dan Lanning of Oregon.
That's strong stuff.
DeBoer has won at every stop in his career. Prior to Washington, he coached two seasons at Fresno State and five seasons at Sioux Falls, an NAIA school where DeBoer went 67-3. At Washington and Fresno State, DeBoer has an overall record of 37-9.
The staff he is expected to bring with him to Tuscaloosa unless one is named his successor includes:
Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach, Ryan Grubb [a possible HC hire by UW]
Assistant Head Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach, William Inge [another candidate as next UW HC]
Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach, Chuck Morrell
Special Teams Coordinator and Edge Rush Coach, Eric Schmidt
Assistant Head Coach, Passing Game Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach, JaMarcus Shephard
Defensive Line Coach, Inoke Breckterfield
Cornerbacks Coach, Julius Brown
Offensive Line Coach, Scott Huff [led the 2023 Joe Moore Award OL]
Running Backs Coach, Lee Marks
Tight Ends Coach, Nick Sheridan
