Eastern Illinois HC Chris Wilkerson Reflects on 56-0 Loss to Alabama
After Eastern Illinois suffered a 56-point shutout loss to Alabama, the Panthers' head coach, Chris Wilkerson, addressed the media regarding his team's performance. He praised the Crimson Tide, highlighting their dominant play on both offense and defense.

Wilkerson began his post-game press conference by expressing how honored he was to play in the historic Bryant-Denny Stadium and to compete against a prestigious program like the Crimson Tide. He referred to Alabama as the "gold standard of college football."
“We said it all week. This is an honor and a privilege to even be in this facility. As I’ve said before, it's the gold standard of college football. Nothing but respect for the University of Alabama, their football program.” Wilkerson said, “I said they were elite in everything they do, and they are. They’re elite with talent. They're elite with talent. They're elite with schemes, they're elite with coaching and adjustments, and the atmosphere was elite.”
Wilkerson discussed the Crimson Tide’s rushing game, which faced criticism this season. However, that was not the case today, as Alabama posted 269 rushing yards in Saturday’s victory, with six different Crimson Tide players scoring rushing touchdowns.
“Yeah, they're big and they're physical. Their offensive line is extremely well-coached. They've got great depth in the backfield, and if you outnumber them in the box, they're very capable of ripping the ball outside on the access throws or the screens.” Wilkerson added, “They block well on the perimeter, and certainly if you do it too much, then they're talented enough to run right by you.”
Eastern Illinois's head coach praised Ty Simpson's performance this season. Simpson has thrown for 2,934 yards and 22 touchdowns, completing 69.3% of his passes. Despite having a two-interception game today, he excelled at connecting on his passes and helping the Tide reach the red zone, which contributed to several of Alabama's rushing touchdowns in their victory on Saturday. Wilkerson even suggested that Simpson should be considered for the Heisman Trophy. Interestingly, Wilkerson coaches in the same league as Simpson's father, Jason, who is the head coach at UT Martin.
“Certainly, Ty has had an awesome season, very familiar with his father, Jason, in our league as the head coach at UT Martin. Again, I think he’s a Heisman Trophy Finalist, in my opinion.”
Wilkerson concluded his press conference by discussing the performance of Alabama’s defensive line, which was crucial in the Crimson Tide's shutout victory. Alabama held Eastern Illinois to just 34 yards, recorded three sacks, and achieved nine tackles for loss, while allowing the Panthers to gain only two first downs throughout the entire game.
“Yeah, they're extremely stout. Again, Kane Womack does a phenomenal job. I think they lead the SEC in scoring defense right now. And they're talented, they're well coached, they move around very well for as big as they are.” Wilkerson added, “And so, you know, I thought we got a body on a body at times, but when there is any space, the space just closes so fast. You dump the ball in the flat, and they suffocate you. There's space for a running back to cut vertically, and again, they get off blocks very well. They're violent at the point of attack, and they suffocate you.”
Alabama will aim to build on this performance as it heads to Lee County next week to take on Auburn in the Iron Bowl. This night game at Jordan-Hare Stadium is crucial for Alabama if it hopes to contend for the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoffs.
