Former Alabama Track Athlete Passes Away
Former Alabama track standout Eliud Kipsang passed away Tuesday at the age of 28.
Per a GoFundMe for Kipsung's funeral expenses, he suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA, on June 6, where he was admitted to the ICU. Kipsang tragically passed away on June 10.
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Eliud Kipsang, one of the most gifted athletes ever to wear crimson and white," said head coach Dan Waters in Alabama Athletics' release. "His impact on our program extended far beyond records and championships; he was a beloved teammate, a brother to so many and a dear friend to me, personally. On behalf of the entire Alabama family, we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. The running community has lost a remarkable soul."
While in Tuscaloosa, Kipsang was named the 2021 SEC Runner of the Year. That same season, Kipsang won gold at the SEC Outdoor Championship in the 1,500 before winning gold at the SEC Cross Country Championships.
In 2022, Kipsang also broke the then-men's collegiate record in the 1,500 after posting a 3:33.74 — a time that remains a school record and a top-five collegiate time. He also holds two other program records in the indoor mile and indoor distance medley relay.
