Former Alabama WR Accused of Assault
Per the Cincinnati Enquirer, former Alabama wide receiver and current Cincinnati Bengal Jermaine Burton is accused of assaulting a woman he had been dating; she opted not to press charges.
The assault was reported on the morning of December 30, nearly a week before the Bengals Week 18 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Burton did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh. The team stated that the coaching staff made the decision.
Sharon Coolidge, Cameron Knight, and Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that this prompted "The Enquirer to make a public records request for information related to Burton." The Enquirer received two reports and a recording of the alleged victim's 911 call on Wednesday morning.
Per The Enquirer, reports stated that Burton and the woman had dated on and off during the month prior to the alleged assault.
The Enquirer writes, "The two had been out together and argued before the incident in the woman's Oakley neighborhood apartment, reports show. After the night out, police were called and the woman said Burton met her at her apartment, chased her inside, damaged her phone and assaulted her, including choking her. The caller said before leaving, Burton held a knife to his neck and threatened to kill himself."
The woman called 911 at approximately 8:45 a.m.
She also said that she and Burton had been out the night before the incident.
Per The Enquirer, the woman stated, "Jermaine Burton on the Bengals just broke into my house, he broke my phone."
The woman added that Burton has "been pretty abusive."
She also reported that Burton threatened to commit suicide.
"He got in my dishwasher, and he grabbed a knife, and he held it to his neck," the caller stated.
"I don't f---ing deserve this, I'm only 19," she added
The team and the Cincinnati Police Department are yet to release a statement.
