Greg Byrne Discusses His Hiring at Alabama [Audio]
Since Nick Saban’s arrival as Alabama’s head football coach, Mal Moore and Bill Battle have served as athletic director in Tuscaloosa.
A third man is set to lead the University of Alabama athletic department. Greg Byrne was formally introduced late last week as Bill Battle’s successor.
Less than a week after introducing himself to the Alabama family, Greg Byrne stepped Inside the Locker Room to discuss his hiring at Alabama.
He touched on a variety of topics including the nature of being a director of an NCAA Division I athletic department, football and basketball scheduling and becoming accustomed with his new surroundings in Tuscaloosa.
Going into a program that has seen individuals like Paul “Bear” Bryant, Mal Moore and Bill Battle sit in the athletic director’s chair, Byrne emphasized his responsibility in reaching the standard that was set before his arrival.
“I think one of the things that you often see when new people come in is they’re very concerned with making their mark. I’m concerned about trying to support the mark that’s already been made.” Byrne said.
Alabama’s incoming director of athletics elaborated on the approach he wants to take relative to learning about the history and culture of Alabama athletics.
“You want to come in and you want to understand and you want to appreciate what the culture is and what the history is. One of the things I’m really going to spend a lot of time on is using my eyes and using my ears and listening and reading and learning and not necessarily coming in with an agenda at all.” Byrne stated.
