“The Ship has Sailed” on the SEC Championship, According to Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne was clear on what the SEC should do with its conference championship game for football: end it.

Since the introduction of the SEC championship game in December 1992 (an Alabama 28-21 victory over Florida), the Crimson Tide has played for the conference championship 16 times and won 11, with the most recent victory coming in 2023. Alabama's 16 appearances and 11 wins are the most in the conference.
Times have changed since the introduction of the conference championship in 1992, and now, Alabama's athletic director is a proponent of going straight from the regular season into the College Football Playoff.
"I think the ship has sailed. It's run its course," Byrne told USA Today about the SEC championship game. "It’s a great event. I don’t like the idea of it going away, but I think it’s reality, with an expanded playoff.”
Byrne isn't the only one who has begun advocating for an end to the SEC title game. Earlier this year, Texas AD Chris Del Conte spoke out against the SEC championship, and then-Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said the same thing in 2024.
"[Coaches] don't want to be in it," Kiffin said.
It's a sentiment shared among coaches, with Georgia head coach Kirby Smart echoing the sentiment after the Bulldogs' 28-7 victory in the SEC championship over Alabama last December.
"Both these teams tonight were beat up," Smart said in his postgame press conference.
"That was the ninth game of the year. We're looking at next year having another game. I mean, the coaches in our league are concerned about it, very concerned about it. I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't speak my piece and say it's concerning. If that game affects Alabama... I don't know if it will or not; I have no say so in it. I sat in those shoes many times where that game cost you an opportunity. Hypothetically, every team just played another game in their ninth game. There's eight more losses. Who just dropped out? Then there's another game, SEC Championship."
With CFP expansion likely in the near future, decision makers across college football are faced with the reality that, while it may generate significant revenue, the juice may no longer be worth the squeeze.
