Greg Sankey Bans Fans from SEC Tournament

Greg Sankey announced on the SEC Network between the two Thursday night SEC Tournament games, that beginning tomorrow fans would not be allowed into Bridgestone Arena to watch the SEC Tournament. The Big 10, Big 12 and the Pac-12 announced similar bans from their conference tournaments earlier today. Sankey also announced a ban on fan attendance at all SEC sporting events until at least March 30.

Alabama will take on Tennessee at noon tomorrow with only essential personnel and family in attendance. Should Alabama beat the Volunteers they would play Kentucky in the next round. The Kentucky Wildcats have historically held a large advantage in the stands at the SEC tournament with its fans traveling very well. Sankey announced that tickets will be refunded for those who have purchased them expecting to see the basketball tournament. Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats earlier in the week stated they would defer all decisions concerning the COVID-19 Coronavirus to the doctors and medical staff.

Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne released a statement based on commissioner Sankey's announcement.

Softball, baseball, tennis, soccer and track and field are currently in season in the SEC and those sports will also be under a fan restriction until at least March 30. Sankey stated they will re-evaluate the state of the COVID-19 virus and its danger to the public at that time.
