Heisman Trophy Race: What They Are Saying in The Game

Heisman Talk from The Game with Ryan Fowler and Mick Gillispie, airing weeknights from 6-8pm

This season when it comes to the Heisman Trophy, the only thing anyone is certain of is that no one is certain of who is the front runner.

In the SEC Johnny Manziel is having a great season, one that probably would be worthy of the Heisman Trophy in most years, but because he is just a redshirt freshman his stock may not be as high as it would appear.  Meanwhile fellow quarterbacks AJ McCarron of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Aaron Murray of Georgia could be in the mix if either of their teams win out.

In Middle America linebacker Manti Te’o of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish could be the leader in the clubhouse after Kansas State’s Colin Klein’s 3 interception performance against unranked Baylor last weekend. However can you really give the Heisman Trophy to a linebacker who doesn’t even lead his team in tackles?

On the west coast Kenjon Barner saw both his stock and the Oregon Ducks title hopes take a big hit last weekend. While he may have been able to overcome the loss, it will be hard to overlook his 21 carry 66 yard performance.

It is starting to sound like this year’s winner may have their name picked out of a hat. There is no clear cut winner out of this group.

Personally, I like Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M. I think the not giving the trophy to a freshman argument is outdated and people need to recognize the most outstanding performance regardless of age.  Without the talented redshirt freshman, I have a hard time imagining the Aggies being in the discussion for a BCS Bowl

Unfortunately, I think he will be robbed of the award for the very reason I despise which could open the door for someone else, perhaps a dark horse candidate(s).

Those players? AJ McCarron and Aaron Murray. If either wins out and looks impressive in leading their team to a national title game, it could be just enough to sway some voters.

With all of that said, who do you choose? Who is your Heisman Front Runner at this stage? Leave your comments below.
