Hillcrest Overwhelms County High in 64-0 Season-Opening Win

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.— Hillcrest dominated County High in both teams’ season opener, building an overwhelming 43-point lead by halftime.

The game was delayed for more than an hour due to lightning, but that didn't slow down the Patriots. After punting on their opening drive, Hillcrest scored on every remaining first-half possession.

Hillcrest’s first touchdown came on a three-play, 25-yard drive, capped by a four-yard run from former County High running back Dylan Taylor. That score put the Patriots up 7-0 with 6:05 left in the first quarter.

The Patriots’ defense, anchored by Class of 2027 Alabama edge commit Jeremiah Beverly, wreaked havoc against County High’s offense. Beverly unofficially recorded two sacks and at least 12 tackles. The Wildcats managed just three first downs in the first half, one of which came from a roughing the passer penalty.

Hillcrest’s defense repeatedly gave the Patriots’ offense favorable field position in County High territory. They capitalized with another first-quarter touchdown, a ten-yard run by junior Jacobi Harris, making it 15-0 with 3:06 left in the opening quarter.

Hillcrest turned it on in the second quarter, scoring 28 points. Senior quarterback Jordan Shambley threw three touchdown passes, two to junior wide receiver Trenton Curley and one to Christopher Compton for 25 yards. Backup quarterback Zion Duncan added a fourth touchdown with a 35-yard pass to Patrick Prince.

County High fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, and Patriots senior linebacker Marvin Johnson returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. That score made it 50-0 with 11:41 left in the third quarter.

Hillcrest added two touchdowns with its backups in to close out a 64-0 season-opening victory.

The Patriots return to action on Friday, August 28, when they travel to face Hewitt-Trussville.

County High falls to 0-1 and will try to bounce back against Central at Falcon Field next Friday.
