Hillcrest Ranks 15th in On3’s Top 25 High School Football Teams in Alabama
Hillcrest High School remains on On3's Alabama High School Football top 25 list, coming in this week ranked 15th in the state after dropping 5 spots from their previous ranking last week, which was 10th in the nation, following the Patriots' loss this past Friday, September 6, 2024.
The Hillcrest Patriots who are currently in their first season as a 7A program after reclassifying from 6A last year got their first taste of 7A Region 3 football after losing 35-6 to the well-known Hoover Buccaneers (Hoover, AL) in their Week 3 battle on Friday.
Hoover, who is currently ranked ninth on On3's list, moved seven spots after dominating the formerly top ten team in the state, improving their record to 2-1.
Hillcrest, who fell to 2-1 after Friday's setback, will seek to rebound this week against region opponent Vestavia Hills (Vestavia Hills, AL), with the 15th-ranked Patriots searching for their first win of the season in region play.
Head coach Jamie Mitchell, who has won two state championships in Mississippi in 2012 and Arkansas in 2017, leads Alabama's number 15 high school football team, according to On3 rankings. Mitchell, a 27-year coaching veteran, has been with the Patriots since his hiring in 2021 and has done nothing but win, with three consecutive seasons of at least ten wins, two of which were back-to-back 11-win seasons, and a 6A region 3 championship in 2022. Mitchell has the Patriots aimed for another ten-win season.
Hillcrest is led on the field by senior quarterback Bryson Kimbrough, who committed to the University of Louisiana Monroe on June 15th. Kimbrough and the Patriots have scored more than 30 points in both of their victories, including a dominant 32-20 season opener against the 7A Florence Falcons (Florence, AL), in which the Patriots defense excelled with two goal-line stops, forcing the Falcons to settle for two field goals.
The following week, Hillcrest repeated the previous week's performance, with their defense dominating and their offense scoring an abundance of points, defeating the 7A Sparkman Senators (Harvest, AL) by 21 points in a dominant 31-10 win.
Hillcrest failed to continue their trend this past Friday, as the Patriots offense only managed to score six points, while their defense allowed more points (35) than they did in their first two games (31). Despite their lousy performance, the Patriots are still ranked in the top 15 of On3's Alabama high school football teams.
Catch the No. 15 high school football team in the state live on Friday, September 13, at Hillcrest High School, as the Patriots (2-1) will face the Vestavia Hills Rebels (0-3).
