This season is slowly becoming one to forget for the Iowa State football program. The team lost two in-state games to begin the year and one of those an embarrassing defeat to FCS opponent Northern Iowa.  Last night provided an opportunity to right the ship and build some momentum as a struggling Texas came to town.

The Cyclones appeared to be in control of the game for most of the night but possessions to end both halves wrecked its chances of winning. The first was a hail mary from Case McCoy to give the Longhorns a halftime lead despite being outplayed for 30 minutes.

Despite that touchdown, Iowa State regained the lead and kept it until late in the fourth quarter. With first and goal inside the five-yard line, Texas ran the ball up the middle on consecutive plays and twice had a potential game-ending fumble blown dead. In fact, Iowa State might have returned the first one for a touchdown. This is how the huge missed call looked on ESPN.

As you probably expect, Rhoads was steaming as he entered the press room for his postgame press conference. He unleashed an angry rant that puts him in a class with the Mike Gundys and Jim Moras of the coaching profession.
