The 2023 NFC Championship game is set with a matchup between the No. 1 seed Philadelphia Eagles and the No. 2 seed San Francisco 49ers. However, this isn't the first time that quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy will be preparing to play against each other.

In Hurts' lone season with Oklahoma in 2019, the former Alabama quarterback had to get the Sooners out of some tough situations, which included winning five games by one possession, for them to successfully claim the last spot in the playoffs. The closest of these games came against Purdy and Iowa State in November, a matchup that Hurts and the Sooners narrowly won 42-41.

Oklahoma had a comfortable lead for majority of the game, leading 42-21 going into the fourth quarter. However, Purdy and the Cyclones had other plans than getting blown out as he threw three touchdowns in the final quarter to bring the score within one point, with the last touchdown coming with 24 seconds remaining in the game. Instead of going for the point after attempt and almost certainly sending the game into overtime, Iowa State decided to go for a two point conversion to take the lead, but Purdy was intercepted on the attempt, sealing Oklahoma's win.

Iowa State finished that season with a 7-6 record and a loss in the Camping World Bowl while Oklahoma finished with a 12-2 record, its second loss coming against quarterback Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers 63-28 in a CFP semifinal game. Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals are playing in the AFC Championship game on Sunday with the opportunity to see Hurts or Purdy if they win.

The stakes for Hurts and Purdy's second matchup is much larger than the first with a trip to Super Bowl LVII on the line. The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers play on Sunday, January 29, at 2 p.m. CT on FOX.
