Mac Jones Benched in Second Quarter of MNF
The New England Patriots have seen enough. At least, for now.
Bill Belichick has benched former Alabama Crimson Tide great and 2021 first round draft pick Mac Jones after just over a quarter of play against the Chicago Bears on ESPN's Monday Night Football. An interception he threw on a lollipop pass was the final straw for Belichick.
Jones was coming off of an ankle injury that saw him on the sidelines for three games. During that time, rookie 4th round draft pick out of Western Kentucky Bailey Zappe has been lighting it up for the Patriots. He seems to run their offense more efficiently than Jones and helped the team elevate its record from 1-2 to 3-3 in his time starting. His one loss as a starter was a game against the Green Bay Packers that went to overtime.
Jones' night ends with a stat line of 3/6 for 13 yards and an interception, giving him a quarterback rating of 16.7.
Albert Breer has reported recently that the relationship between Jones and the Patriots has suffered this year, and with Zappe throwing two touchdowns in just a handful of minutes after Jones' benching, it's possible the relationship is now irreparable.
