Prepare for traffic delays (and a few headaches) as a portion of McFarland Boulevard is set to close to traffic all weekend.

ALDOT continues its work placing girders on 20/59 as part of the plan to expand the interstate. The portion of McFarland Boulevard that goes underneath the 20/59 bridge has been closed during the overnight hours this week, and crews are now preparing to have this closure remain in effect from Friday through Monday.

Law enforcement officials will be on hand from 11 p.m. Friday night through 5 a.m. Monday morning to direct traffic, as no traffic will be allowed on the affected portion of McFarland Boulevard. Drivers are encouraged to use Skyland Boulevard, Interstate 359, or Highway 215 as alternate routes.

The work is part of the project to expand Interstate 20/59, increasing commerce and decreasing commute times. The expansion project is currently slated to be completed by 2020.
