Mercer HC Mike Jacobs Following a 45-Point Beatdown Against Alabama
On Saturday, November 16th, 2024, the Alabama Crimson Tide hosted the Mercer Bears in Bryant Denny Stadium, and the Tide defeated the Bears 52-7. Following the beating, Mercer's Head Coach Mike Jacobs spoke with the media about the frustrating loss.
After Saturday's upsetting defeat to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Mercer's head coach began his press conference with the following statement: "We aren't in this for any sort of moral victory, but I am impressed and proud of our guys' effort." Mercer did not win, but it was able to move the ball around a little bit on the Crimson Tide, with Bear quarterback Whitt Newbaeur completing 15 out of 22 passes and totaling 140 yards through the air, with one touchdown coming in a Sportscenter top 10 fashion with Mercer's wide receiver Kendall Harris for a one-handed 31-yard touchdown catch.
Mercer's head coach remarked that his team must "turn the page pretty quickly" with the Bears meeting Furman at home next Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, to secure an outright Southern Conference Championship.
Following the game, Jacobs mentioned various areas where his team has to improve, one of which was "backside ball security," as the Crimson Tide's defense recovered two fumbles, one of which was returned for a 68-yard score by Alabama's Freshmen defensive back.
Mike Jacobs, which is in his first season with the Mercer Bears after being hired in January of this year, discussed the significance of his team having that "measured moment." and not letting Saturday's loss bring the squad down after losing by 45 points against a superior team.
Mercer will fall to 9-2 after this loss, with the Bears currently leading the Southern league standings with a 6-1 record in league play. The Bears are just one win away from claiming the Outright Southern Conference Championship next week with a home victory over the 3-7 Furman Paladins on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024.
