Alabama football head coach Nick Saban spoke out on his new opinion on the expansion of the College Football Playoffs.

In an interview for the HBO show Back on the Record with Bob Costas, the seven-time national champion discussed why his opinion has changed over the years.

"Well I was always, sort of, against expanding the playoffs because I was one of the first to say, when we had a two-team playoff, the more we expand the playoffs, the more we're going to minimize the importance of bowl games. Now, I've changed my opinion about this," said Saban.

The biggest thing that changed his stance on where college football is headed was watching players opt out more frequently over the years.

"Going to the Sugar Bowl as an SEC coach has been... that was one of great competitive venues and great opportunities you could ever have as a player," said Saban. "Now, players opt out if it's not a part of the playoffs. So therefore, I'm for expanding the playoffs."

However, one thing that does concern Saban is the impact that extra games could have on collegiate players.

"I think 12 might be the right number. How we get there, I don't really know. But we do have to be careful about how many games a college player plays," said Saban.

Saban's episode of Back on the Road with Bob Costas will air on HBO on Friday, September 9, 2022 at 10 p.m. CST.
