Former three star quarterback Phillip Ely will leave the University of Alabama to join the Toledo Rockets. Ely will have to sit out the 2013 season, but will have two years of eligibility remaining in 2014.

Illinois, Vanderbilt and the University of South Florida before eventually deciding on Toledo.

While not the highest rated prospect out of high school, Ely, like former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy had a reputation for being a part of winning programs. The 6-foot-1, 210lb quarterback led Plant High School to back-to-back state championships, then was part of Alabama’s back-to-back championship teams in 2011 and 2012.

Ely saw limited duty with the Crimson Tide, redshirting his first year at the Capstone. In his freshman season he completed 3-of-4 passes for 42 yards, including a 27 yard touchdown pass to Eddie Lacy against Mississippi State on October 27th. In this year’s A-Day spring scrimmage Ely completed 2-of-4 passes.

In the report filed by Ryan Bass, Ely noted that he did not regret signing with Alabama and learned a lot from head coach Nick Saban during his tenure in Tuscaloosa.
