The documentary titled "Adapted" will chronicle the history of the ground-breaking program and how it is has started another Alabama Athletics dynasty. The Adapted Athletics program includes the men's and women's wheelchair basketball and the wheelchair tennis team.
Recently, the wheelchair tennis team won its fifth consecutive national championship in Orlando on April 18. The Tide won all three set against the Michigan Wolverines to stay at the top. Team member Thomas Venos also took home the Tier 1 Singles Championship.
The men's and women's wheelchair basketball teams hosted nationals this season. The women's team won their seventh national championship in twelve years against Texas-Arlington, 67-53. The women finished 10-1 overall and stayed perfect in conference play. The men finished runner-up in this year's tournament after a 51-66 loss to UT-Arlington. The men finished with an 8-6 overall record and a 6-6 record in conference play.
UA Adapted Athletics started in 2003 with the formation of the women's wheelchair basketball team. Since then, the program has won nine national championships in men and women's basketball (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021) and six in wheelchair tennis (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021) with a total of 16 championships for the program.
Alabama is one of 21 colleges with an adapted athletics program and is only one of four schools in the Southeastern Conference, including Auburn, Texas A&M and Missouri. The department continues to expand as adapted rowing and wheelchair track has been named two of the upcoming sports.
"Adapted" will air tonight on the SEC Network at 9:00 p.m.
