Bill Belicheck is a smart man; however, I find it hard to believe that the New England Patriots signing of Tim Tebow is anything but smart.

Through the course of the offseason we have heard: Tim Tebow does not have the ability to play quarterback, the circus surrounding Tebow was something most teams did not want to deal with, and even that some inside his personal camp were admitting his career was probably over. Now, ESPN's Ed Werder has announced that the former Heisman trophy winner has agreed to terms with New England.

I must be missing something.

The Patriots have arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the national football league in Tom Brady. He is starting to get up there in years (35 years old, 36 in August), but it is hard to imagine the man who led the Patriots to 5 Super Bowls and 3 wins will be slowing down any time soon.

But when he does the Patriots have a backup plan in place: Ryan Mallett, the six-foot-six gunslinger out of Arkansas with all the tools has been sitting patiently behind Brady over the past 3 seasons, soaking up the Patriots system.

Meanwhile, Tebow has been a great leader, but a less than great quarterback. The Patriots of all teams should know this-Tebow completed just 20 of 56 passes against New England for 330 yards, in TWO games. I am confused how anyone finds those numbers impressive.  Sure he had some success and won some games, but it remains to be seen whether that was a flash in the pan or if he can maintain that kind of success.

Word on the street is that Mallett will soon become trade-bait and Tebow will become the heir apparent under the tutelage of his former head coach Josh McDaniels as everyone praises his ability to be a great teammate (because the reports are out there that Tebow does not practice well, so no praise there).

If this is the case, start selling your Patriots stock the second Brady decides to call it a career-the days of consistent 10+ win seasons and Super Bowl appearances will be over.

I certainly understand the decision to bring in Tebow with the McDaniels connection; its just not a good one.
