South Alabama is on Fire
The South Alabama Jaguars delivered an impressive performance on Sept. 19 against Appalachian State. Just a week earlier, on Sept. 12, the Jaguars made headlines by scoring the highest points by an FBS team in 33 years, dominating Northwestern State with an 87-10 victory.
With the latest win, the Jaguars improved to 2-2 for the season, defeating the Mountaineers 48-14 and securing the largest conference road victory in the program's history.
Quarterback Gio Lopez completed 16/24 passes for 259 yards, combining 154 passing yards with 105 rushing yards, and threw three touchdown passes. Running back Fluff Bothwell continued to impress, rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns for 14 carries. Kentrell Bullock and Iverson Celestine also contributed with rushing touchdowns, while DJ Thomas-Jones and Jamaal Pritchett each caught touchdown passes.
The Jaguars defense effectively contained the Mountaineers and their Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, Joey Aguilar, forcing two turnovers in the red zone. The Mountaineers two touchdowns came from Hail Mary's on the last play of the first half and against the Jaguars second-string defense with just 52 seconds remaining in the game.
The victory marked the Jaguars second consecutive blowout win on a Thursday night, amassing a total of 135 points over the past two games, setting a conference record for points scored in that span.
Having talented players is a significant advantage for an offensive coordinator. Rob Ezell, a former Tide wide receiver, currently holds the position of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Jaguars. Under his guidance, the team has demonstrated notable improvements in offensive execution and strategy.
Entering the game as a seven-point underdog, the Jaguars quickly took control, leading 28-7 at halftime and mainted their momentum thanks to Ezell's approach.
As the season unfolds, analysts are praising the Jaguars performances and anticipating an exciting remainder of the season. Next up, the Jaguars will face Louisiana State University on the road.
