Tide Golf Wraps Up Regular Season
The University of Alabama men's golf team has concluded its final spring 2023 regular season tournament. The Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Miss., hosted by Mississippi State, was the Tide's last bout before the SEC Championships.
With a solid third-round finish, the Crimson Tide ended the event in the No. 6 position. Seniors Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder led the charge as they shot 9-under and 4-under, respectively. Freshman Johnathan Griz was in the top 10 in a five-way tie for sixth at 10-under-par but was playing individually. Meaning his score was not counted toward the team's total.
No. 15 Tenessee beat No. 4 Auburn by one stroke to take the team title. The field for the Mossy Oak Collegiate consisted of six SEC teams providing a preview for the upcoming SEC Championship.
Head coach Jay Seawell was proud of the team's performance yet knows they need to stay focused for what is ahead.
"We completed our regular season this week and I thought the guys have done a good job of growing throughout the entire year," said Seawell. "I wish we had putted better this tournament, but that's just golf. We'll move on from that. Overall, I am pleased with this result and pleased with the progress the guys have made this season. They have really worked hard and it shows. Now, it's time to reset as we get into championship season, which is the really exciting part of college golf. I am looking forward to starting that journey when we compete at the SEC Championships in a couple of weeks. We need to continue to work hard because we'll be facing the best golfers and golf teams in the best conference in the nation, so we are really looking forward to it."
The SEC Championship will be held at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simon's Island, GA, on April 19-23. The championship will feature both stroke and match play, separating it from the regular season events.
With eight teams inside the top 20, Alabama has quite the competition waiting for them at St. Simon's Island.
