Alabama signs fifth rated safety Tony Mitchell to add on to what is now a loaded early signing day class.

Mitchell committed to the Tide in June but initially committed to the Tennessee Volunteers in the summer before his freshmen year. The premier defensive back is expected to be a key contributor next season with the loss of senior Jordan Battle and junior Brian Branch likely declaring for the NFL Draft.

Mitchell is listed at 6-foot-2 and is currently a 4-star prospect, ranked as the fifth best safety in the country and the 54 best player in the 2023 class.

The Alabaster native suited up for the Thompson Warriors for all four years of his high school career. Mitchell won four state championships in all four years at Thompson, most recently this past season where he was viewed as the best safety in the state.

Mitchell finished his senior campaign totaling 56 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and six pass breakups.

Mitchell's success earned him an invite to the Under Amour All American game on January 3 in Orlando, Florida.

The Under Amour All American can be very versatile in coverage throughout the secondary but appears to be most comfortable as a slot defender and as a deep safety. Mitchell has the ability to play corner if needed as an option but is a prototypical safety.

Mitchell will be an early enrollee and will be able to practice with the team leading up to the Sugar Bowl against Kansas State but will not participate in the game. Expect to see Mitchell's collegiate debut against Middle Tennessee State on Sept 2.
