WKU’s HC Tyson Helton Reaction After Losing to Tide
In his postgame press conference with WKUSports on Saturday, August 31, Western Kentucky's head coach Tyson Helton revealed some of his thoughts on the team's blowout loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Tyson Helton and his Hilltoppers arrived in Tuscaloosa hoping to shock the world when they faced the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide. Western Kentucky appeared to accomplish the opposite, as the Hilltoppers suffered an ugly 63-point loss on the road, leaving Hilltopper supporters feeling gloomy.
Helton made comments about his offense, which scored zero points and gained 145 yards of total offense in Saturday's game.
WKU's head coach praised senior quarterback TJ Finley, who threw two interceptions in the first quarter. WKU's head coach also mentioned that he thought Finley performed well at times, maintained calm under pressure, and made some good passes.
Finley passed for 92 yards and completed 18 of 31 passes, including two interceptions, before being replaced by sophomore quarterback Caden Veltkamp before the end of the first half.
Veltkamp, who led the Hilltoppers back from a 28-point deficit against Old Dominion in the Famous Toastery Bowl, only gained 11 yards through the air.
The Hilltoppers' head coach briefly discussed his defense, stating that he felt they gave up too many "explosive plays," which was not a lie, as the Hilltoppers gave up three touchdowns of more than 50 yards, including Crimson Tide standout true freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams, who racked up over 139 yards and two touchdowns on only two receptions.
With all of the negative that occurred tonight, coach Helton simply wants his players to forget about their performance tonight and return to practice next week, prepared to face Eastern Kentucky University at home.
Tyson Helton also mentioned several times in his press conference how good the Crimson Tide is and how excited he is to see what they can do this season.
Western Kentucky and head coach Tyson Helton will try to remove Saturday night's game from their minds as they prepare for FCS opponent Eastern Kentucky Colonels at home in L.T Smith Stadium, where the Hilltoppers will try to win their first game of the season.
