This Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, following the new release of the CFP rankings, which saw Alabama rise to #11 and the Miami Hurricanes fall six spots to #12 following the Canes' 42-38 loss to Syracuse on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips took to social media to express his displeasure after Miami's Athletic Director shared his frustrations regarding Miami's new ranking.

In a statement to Brett McMurphy, Phillips expressed his gratitude to the committee for recognizing SMU's accomplishments this season. He stated, “We are certainly pleased that SMU moved up in the rankings and that the committee continued to acknowledge the Mustangs' incredible season, which should clearly earn them a playoff spot, regardless of this weekend's outcome.” SMU is set to face Clemson in the ACC Championship next week.

Phillips went on to express his dissatisfaction with how the committee assessed Miami and conducted their evaluation when it came to ranking, saying, "We are also incredibly shocked and disappointed that Miami dropped six spots to No. 12."

The ACC Commissioner went on to make his case for why Miami should be ranked ahead of Alabama, claiming that "Miami has more wins and fewer losses than the team directly ahead of them and a dominant victory over an SEC team whose late-season surge includes a win over No. 13 Ole Miss." Phillips also stated that "Miami absolutely deserves better from the Committee."

Alabama jumped the Hurricanes with a strong 14-point victory in the 89th Iron Bowl over a 5-7 Auburn squad that had defeated top 25 Texas A&M in four overtimes the week before. Alabama's best wins came against a 10-2 Georgia team that will face Texas in the SEC Championship this Saturday, as well as a #14 ranked South Carolina club that was vying for a spot in the College Football playoffs.

Phillips concluded his statement by requesting that the CFP committee "reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field," which would be contrary to CFP Committee Chairman Warde Manuel's claim that "any team that is not playing right now, we don't have a data point to rearrange where we have those teams ranked, and so that is set in terms of how we see them going into the final week of championship week."
