Alabama Adds Former Patriots Assistant to Staff

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - On Tuesday, Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide added a former NFL assistant coach to their staff.

Tyler Hughes, a former New England Patriot assistant coach, has joined the Alabama football staff according to Nick Kelly of AL.com.

Tyler Hughes was an offensive quality control coach with the Washington Huskies in 2023, working with Kalen DeBoer as Washington made an appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Hughes coached with the New England Patriots as a wide receiver coach in 2024.

Before joining Washington in 2023, he spent time with the Patriots from 2020 - 2023.

The only other major university Hughes coached at was Ohio State, where he was a quality control coach during the 2013 season.

Hughes re-joins several familiar faces on the Crimson Tide coaching staff from his time at Washington. Kalen DeBoer was the head coach, Ryan Grubb was the offensive coordinator, JaMarcus Shephard was the wide receiver coach, and Nick Sheridan was the tight end coach at Washington in 2023.

In 2025, Kalen DeBoer is the Alabama head coach, Ryan Grubb is the offensive coordinator, Nick Sheridan is the quarterbacks coach, and JaMarcus Shephard is coaching wide receivers.

DeBoer is bringing championship-quality coaches to the Alabama staff this season in hopes of turning around an Alabama program that went 9-4 in his first year as the coach.
