Alabama Athletics Loses $27 Million in 2024
The University of Alabama athletic department was in red during the fiscal year of 2024, according to AL.com. Matt Stahl reports that Alabama lost over $28 million department-wide during the 2024 fiscal year.

Stahl reports that UA open record project specialist Jessica Schingle said this in a statement to AL.com, "
“The net loss reported for the year was largely due to one-time expenses associated with the football coaching transition."
According to Stahl's report, the University of Alabama athletics department reported $234,825,632 in revenue during the fiscal year, from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. The department spent $262,789,471.
The loss is $27,963,839. This is the second straight year that the University of Alabama has reported a loss in athletics. Last year's deficit was explained by $14.3 million in gifts that were not accounted for during the fiscal year 2023.
Alabama football was the driving factor in the athletic department's finances. The program reported $140.3 million in revenue and $113.8 million in expenses, totaling a surplus of $26.4 million.
Alabama men's basketball brought in $21.3 million during the 2024 fiscal year, which includes its first Final Four in program history. The program spent $15.3 million in the 2024 fiscal year, resulting in a $6 million surplus.
Alabama's biggest expense in 2024, and the reason for the net negative for the athletic department, was the coach's pay and benefits.
Support staff also increased to $41.5 million, up from $37.3 million in the 2023 fiscal year.
What was Alabama's largest source of revenue in 2024? Contributions, piling up $75.3 million, a massive increase from $48,963,013 in 2023. $53.5 million came from football.
Media rights were second place for Alabama in the revenue department, adding in $56.2 million.
